A Deep History of the English Bible

For three thousand years, the Bible has passed through the hands of rulers, church authorities, translators, committees, publishers, and digital platforms. Each inherited a text already shaped by earlier institutions, then made consequential decisions about its contents, language, circulation, and interpretation.

A Deep History of the English Bible follows that process from the scroll discovered during King Josiah’s reign through the Septuagint and Latin Vulgate, then into the struggles surrounding Wycliffe, Tyndale, the Geneva Bible, and the King James Version. The story continues through the twentieth-century battles over the RSV and NIV and into a world of Bible apps and artificial intelligence.

At each turning point, the book asks a deceptively simple question: What did the institution authorizing the text need that text to do?

The answers reveal a recurring mechanism. Translators performed serious scholarship while working within political, ecclesiastical, denominational, and commercial structures that shaped the choices available to them. Institutional interests influenced which texts survived, which translations were sanctioned, and how authoritative readings were established.

Written for a broad audience, the book treats the Bible as a historical object of extraordinary consequence. It takes no position on the truth of religious doctrine. Primary sources and established scholarship provide the evidentiary foundation, with uncertainty identified where the record cannot support a definitive conclusion.

The institutions changed. The text kept escaping them.
